5FM Takes On The Airports Company South Africa Disability Expo Media Challenge

The eighth Airports Company South Africa Disability Conference will be held from 6 to 8 September 2012. The show aims to showcase disability lifestyle solutions as well as the abilities of people with disabilities.
As part of creating awareness of the expo and the importance of educating the general public about the challenges and achievements of people with disabilities, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has invited media personalities to participate in a Wheelchair Challenge ahead of the expo. ACSA will provide the wheelchairs and, upon completing the challenge, the media personalities will be encouraged to donate them to a charity of their choice. The main objective of this initiative is to give a perspective into what it means to live with a disability.
5FM’s afternoon drive team – The Fresh Drive – has accepted the challenge. The team, which comprises Thato Sikwane ‘DJ Fresh’, Poppy Ntshongwana, Catherine Grenfel and Duran Collett, will express their support on Monday, 3 September 2012 by spending a day in wheelchairs.
“We are excited to have one of the country’s top radio personalities supporting our initiative,” explains ACSA Group Manager: Communications, Solomon Makgale. “The ACSA Disability Expo is the only public showcase of its kind on the African continent. And, through the Wheelchair Media Challenge, we hope to start creating conversations in our communities on the importance of celebrating and acknowledging the challenges and achievements of people with disabilities.”
Makgale adds that ACSA hopes that the Fresh Drive’s involvement in this initiative will start mobilising South Africans to be more conscious of the needs and skills of people with disabilities. It is particularly appropriate that the conference and expo is being held at the same time as the Paralympic Games in London. Both events will serve to raise awareness of disability issues.
