However, choosing to rely solely on a pre-programmed software system to make these somewhat sophisticated decisions may result in incorrect calculations, which will put you, as the employer, at risk of being charged large penalties by SARS.
3 – Avoid Late Or Incorrect Tax Filings
Small business owners are particularly aware of the need to cut costs – and one area where this principle certainly applies is unnecessary tax bills. Poor payroll management can result in late or incorrect tax filings, and the upshot of this can be various fines or penalties. Sometimes late or incorrect returns are the result of slower manual payroll processes, but it can also be a case of the payroll administrator being unfamiliar with the tax laws that govern how employees should be paid, as well as the laws that dictate tax payments of Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), Skills Development Levy (SDL) and Workmen’s Compensation Fund (WF).

Thank you for a very informative article Amy. I do however want to point out the advantages of outsourcing the payroll function to a suitable supplier. I do believe the key here is “suitable”. I agree that relying to heavily on ill-suited suppliers could lead to errors and an “administrative” exercise could lead to unforeseen penalties and possibly even interest. The key is therefore for owners to select an appropriately qualified supplier and to put a service level agreement in place to management the relationship. The new Tax Administration Bill which will become legislation in the next few months will require tax practitioners to be registered with a professional body which will assist owners in selecting and ensuring that their supplier stays current with changes in legislation. The advantage to a successful outsourcing arrangement is that it leaves the owner to concentrate on the success of the enterprise or venture. I must qualify the aforementioned in saying that there must be constant communication and feedback between the owner and the supplier as the owner is ultimately responsible for the affairs of the enterprise.
