Were you the perfect host to a bunch of Brazilians during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™? Or did you invite a few international soccer fans to a braai at your house? Maybe you just made a tourist feel welcome at the local pub. Whatever your experience… South African Tourism wants to know about it.

The tourism body has extended a Welcome Challenge to all South Africans, who made visitors feel welcome during the World Cup, to record their experiences on its “Feel the Welcome” website on www.feelthewelcome.co.za. International visitors are also asked to share their positive experiences on the site.

Global Manager: Events South African Tourism (SAT), Sugen Pillay, says the aim of the Welcome Challenge is to celebrate the warmth of South Africa’s hospitality. “It’s about showcasing our people, guests and experiences first hand. This challenge will prove to the rest of the world just how lekker, passionate, patriotic and hospitable we are as a nation,” he says.

The Welcome Challenge forms part of SA Tourism’s ongoing Fly the Flag campaign and is aimed at counteracting some of the negative comments about South Africa that did the rounds prior to the soccer tournament.

Pillay says SA Tourism wants to acknowledge the South Africans who extended warm welcomes to visitors to the country. “Whether they took visitors to a local shebeen for bunny chow or taught them the Diski Dance to belt out a vuvuzela beat, we want to know about it. People can upload pictures and videos onto the site,” he says.

The Welcome Challenge is all about harnessing the positive energy that was generated during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and keeping the hype alive. “We showed the world that we are a gracious nation and that we are happy to host visitors to our beautiful country, now and in the future. After all, every South African can play a role in marketing this country going forward and making it an attractive and welcoming destination for tourists,” he concluded.
