“How much time I am supposed to give my staff for breaks?”

Section 14 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act covers meal breaks. An employee must have a meal interval of 60 minutes after five hours work. A written agreement may:

  • reduce the meal interval to 30 minutes;
  • dispense with the meal interval for employees who work fewer than six hours on a day.

Lunch breaks are unpaid.

The Act doesn’t refer to tea breaks or any other breaks. Employers can either write these into their policies or determine standards that fit their company culture or industry. Breaks other than lunch breaks are usually paid.

    Our company had the same workplace issue with staff constantly taking breaks. I purchased a harvard product from this company that helped me emencely. It deals with things that are quite touchy in the workplace. It also discusses subjects such as:

    Difficult interactions
    Dissmissing an employee
    Diversity
    Hiring
    Laying off Employees
    Retaining Employees
