Is the internet magic?

I was sent a brilliant presentation the other day that echoed a thought on my mind over the last few months. In a post titled ‘harbouring a healthy skeptism for the internet‘ I speak about the need to stop seeing the internet as a quick solution for you to make money. This is the mindset that I see all to often with people looking to the internet.
People seem to think that the internet is a magic box that can make easy money. The truth is, like in any business, you need to spend time working at it, thinking about it, tweaking it and selling it.
The internet has tons of potential
YES! The internet is, in my opinion, the best medium to invest in today. If I didn’t believe that I would be a lousy internet consultant. Using internet technologies can give your business the leading edge you need to compete in the future of business. The internet has a place in marketing your business, engaging in HR activities, providing better finance and management solutions, conducting meetings and pretty much every aspect of business.
My point here is not to doubt the value of the internet but to rather remind people that an internet business is still and business and that all your business principles need to be applied to.
Innovation is not entrepreneurship
Innovation is all about solving problems for people that have not been solved yet. Entrepreneurship means being able to turn that solution into a viable business. Google is a great innovation however is was the entrepenural mindset that came many years later (by copying other business ideas) that lead to using the platform to sell advertising. Any great business idea needs a great business plan to make is profitable.
Enough from me
Right, thats enough from me. My advice would be to take the time to watch this video presentation by David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of the Ruby on Rails framework and Partner at 37Signals gives insight into creating a profitable startup company.
The video is a bit old (2008) but the content is very valuable!
