With only 20 days left in 2009 we look at the eighth of the 90 day challenge projects: Personal Learning.
If your business were an arrow, your learning and wisdom would be the feathers that guide and stabilize it in flight. School is never out for a business owner, you need to read, learn, attend seminars and workshops and hire a mentor or coach to keep up with the fast pace of information. Our wisdom that comes from information plus experience is often the factor that separates a business going out of business and one that is booming. People need to know that you can provide the support and backing of your product through advice and guidance.
As a business owner there are three areas you need to focus on, In, On and Out of our business. This needs to be reflected in your learning. We need to keep up to date with the technical aspect of what we do. This we can get through Trade magazines, industry papers, blogs and websites together with forums. But never exclude working on your business and read up on marketing, financial issues, new regulations and general business acumen topics. Last but not least always fit in some reading and invest in yourself. Buy a novel, attend a course on a new hobby; learn to make your own beer or cheese, take up fly-fishing or model trains.
This helps with balance, stress management and brain building.
With Christmas just a few weeks away take a stroll through your favorite book store and buy 3 books: one technical, one business and one just for you. Enjoy.
Only one more challenge left to complete your fully functional business by the end of 2009.
