Microsoft Launches An Anti-virus Program – Will You Trust It?

Microsoft has now launched their non-beta version of its Security Essentials software which is said to be very promising. It’s available to everyone – free of cost. Free anti-virus programs usually don’t have the best reputation when it comes to quality of their protection, but is Microsoft Security Essentials any different? Is it reliable?
The software promises to cover all the basics when it comes to security. Microsoft assures us that it will protect against viruses, spyware and other malicious software as well as “run quietly in the background” so as to not intrude too much. Microsoft Security Essentials is always kept up to date so you’re protected against the latest technology on a regular basis. It’s also compatible for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
Now, can you trust it? Free antivirus programs differ in quality just as often as paid security programs. PC World tested 9 free security programs, including Microsoft Security Essentials, to find the ones that are reliable.
According to PC World free apps usually have less-frequent malware-signature updates than paid products do. Most of the free apps they tested only updated their signatures once a day but Microsoft Security Essentials check suspicious samples that don’t match a particular installed signature by running the sample against Microsoft’s latest online signatures.
