With only 30 days left in 2009 we look at the seventh of the 90 day challenge projects; Network Development. The number one reason for small businesses failing always leads back to the lack of support. Developing a network that will assist you in your journey as a business owner is critical.

Michael Gerber tells us to work both in and on our business. I add a third option to work out of your business. Each of these requires a network to assist you in your duties.
1. Working in your business requires a Foundation Network. This is a network made up of strategic people who have complimentary skills to your own who will assist in the day to day running of the core functions of your business. Accountant, bookkeeper, web developer, designer, product specialist, Mentor and lawyer.
2. Working on your business requires an Expansion Network. This is a network made up of strategic people who will assist your business in growth into both the current and new markets. People with whom you share your dreams, goals and passions. They become your brand champions and bring in referrals and new contacts. People you meet at networking sessions, your coach and people who are sought out for their networks who are placed in future growth arenas.
3. Working out of your business requires a Support Network. This is a network made up of people with whom you can socialize with without the fear of business advice or judgment. People who can join you and the family for a braai or rugby game and who are willing to listen to your issues of life without having to ‘fix’ the problem or offer unsolicited advice. People who are just there to support and care for you as a person and family member.
Three different networks made up of strategic appointments that have been defined and sought out to become your networks for life, business and beyond. Not easy for some. Do not get them confused. Make a list and begin today. Next challenge looks at Personal Learning.

Bruce, I couldn’t agree more and there is just not enough support out there for would-be and existing entrepreneurs. Hence my website, the SME Toolkit, which is a SME information site free and open to all small business owners. I hope you’ll have a look and provide some insight/feedback.

Rene, Thanks for your comment. I have used your site and recommended it to others. The more information a business owner can get the better. The issue comes when firstly we do not read what we have and secondly we do not do what we need to. Solve these two issues for South African Business Owners and you can write your own salary cheques.

Mmmm…. I’ll chew on that.
