Who uses their phone?

The Mail & Guardian reports that the cell phone market has grown at 550% in the last 5 years in Africa. Now this may sound impressive and encouraging to airtime sellers but what does it actually mean to us?

Cell PhoneFirstly, it is a reflection on the low penetration of landlines in most African countries with the infrastructure either been torn down or never installed.

It also reflects on the need for people to communicate more and more as they become business smart.

The flip side is a second study released this week that indicates that cell phone owners only use an average of 2.9 functions on their phones. Camera, SMS & music rated as the top 3.

So as we discussed this past week in the Heavy Chef session, it is great to have a huge range of apps and marketing gizmos but how do we begin to convert those 2.9 function users into becoming more active online and responding to marketing campaigns and messages? Huge challenge; lets think tank on this one.
