Last week, I had the opportunity of interviewing SA’s top female Twitter user, Tina Cook, on using Twitter for business. Tina is a social media strategist and certified guerrilla marketing coach. She joined Twitter 19 months ago and is now considered one of the top Twitter users in South Africa. Tina suggested 4 useful pointers any business should keep in mind when running a Twitter profile.
1) Twitter Profile
It’s important when creating a Twitter account to select a Twitter ID very carefully because it affects search engine optimization. When using your company name or you own name you need to make sure people can recognise that it is who they are looking for. Another thing to keep in mind when setting up your Twitter profile is your background and profile picture. Customize them so they are easily recognisable. Tina says “remember, people want to connect with the real person”.
2) Tweeting
When posting tweets you should use them to establish yourself as a go-to person in your field. Also, engage in the conversations around you and offer useful information. It’s all about building relationships. For Tina, Twitter is about sharing – “you’re giving a lot”. This does not necessarily refer to only sharing your own content.
3) Social Platforms
It’s important to integrate other social media platforms to increase visibility on the web. Twitter and LinkedIn have recently linked up so you can post your tweets as your LinkedIn status by just adding #in at the end of your tweet. You should also make use of other social media platforms such as Facebook and Youtube
4) Follow
I have mentioned the importance of following people back in one of my previous posts and Tina emphasised this point as well. People want to engage in a two-way conversation.
The whole point behind using Twitter for business is to increase visibility on the web. By using social media platforms and creating a similar profile on each platform increases your presence on the web and affects search engine optimization. Thanks Tina for providing us with these helpful pointers.
