The South African national anthem demystified

South Africa is quite possibly one of the few nations in the world whose population largely don’t know how to sing and pronounce their own national anthem. With 2010 coming up, I was delighted to see that some cleaver person (unknown to us) has demystified the anthem and made it really easy to get to grips with. I’m hoping that our sporting heroes will make use of this as well – nothing like seeing them mumbling their way through the anthem at the start of each game.

What? SA’s population “largely” don’t know how to sing the National Anthem? Not true. It’s only a small minority of whiteys who can’t be bothered to learn the words, 15 full years after 1994.

@Travis – Admittedly I haven’t taken a survey so I don’t know the exact numbers but I did find the singing of the national anthem at the Federations Cup rather dissapointing.

I think it’s more a case where our National Anthem contains so many different languages that most don’t understand all the languages. Whether it’s an Afrikaans speaking person not understanding Sotho or an English person not understanding Afrikaans. I personally don’t know anyone who speaks more than 2 of South Africa’s official languages. I can sing the National Anthem – that doesn’t mean I know what all of it means.
