With only 50 days left in 2009 we look at the fifth of the 90 day challenge projects; Staff Alignment. Now upfront I need to state that I am not an HR manager or know all the ins and outs of our complex labour law, but I do know that any staff member who arrives at work not engaged is a liability to any business.
Getting your staff aligned and engaged is one of the most complex functions of any business owner/manager. Attaining the perfect balance between skill usage and contributed energy produces a plugged in, attentive, productive staff member. So how do we do this; here are some ideas.
- Learn a little more about each of your staff member’s home life situation
- Review their education qualifications and experience
- Assess their personal strengths to help find their ‘sweet spot’ within your business
Together map out a road map for their future, including education and learning opportunities- Assess their lifestyle stress together with some recommendation on stress management
- Conduct or outsource personal time management courses
- Put everyone through a physical and mental health programme
- Set team and personal goals with dashboards
- Get buy in for the business’s WIGS
- Reward teams for reaching their goals and target points
- Finally, learn to listen to their whole body when they speak, we can hear more from body posture and gestures than words
Not always easy but these go a long way to developing sustainable employee relationships resulting in engaged employees, better productivity and more profits.
Give it a bash for the next 10 days, next time we focus on you, the business owner.
