Small business advertising campaign

Following on from our post yesterday, covering some nifty tips to advertising in a recession, we’ve seen some cool examples of small business advertising campaigns – ie. targeted, creative and, best of all, cost-effective. Here’s one from a previous Ideate interviewee, Executive Touring’s Clive Friedberg. He’s got a nifty transfers company that provides personalised tours for executives and managers in the Western Cape.

In anticipation of the 2009 Loerie Awards in August, in Cape Town (the Loeries are sort of like the Oscars for South Africa’s ad agencies), Clive has put together a mini campaign targeting ad agencies, marketing managers, executives and journalists who’re travelling south to attend the awards. Clive has come up with the killer idea of creating postcards with the ads printed on them, and sending them directly to potential customers. “It’s a personal approach. Cost effective, but not tacky,” says Clive.

“I got a freelance designer and a copywriter to execute the campaign. It needed to be professional if we’re targeting the creative industry, so I couldn’t knock these together on Word – but I couldn’t afford a big agency either.”

Clive explained: “I wanted a visual representation of what the Cape has to offer, but somehow link it to the Loerie Award Ceremony.” Nice. Simple, yet effective. Clive also gave us a sneak view at some of the rejects (i.e. too risque to use), but we kinda like ‘em…

Then, there’s this little number – Executive Touring’s effort to attract attention to their Luxury Overnight Karoo Winter Special (below). Clive’s going to be distributing this through Cape Tourism’s newsletter, as well as various websites and blogs.

Well done Clive. Nice and striking – definitely enough to stand out in a crowd.

Please send us more examples of your small business creative campaigns. We’d love to see some more killer stuff.
