I did a preso at ABSA’s small business monthly event a short while ago. Mike (my business partner) and I spoke about Social Media and Small Business, and we got the groups to come up with their own strategies as part of the interaction. It was loads of fun, and thanks again to Nico Jacobs, Gordon Sharman and the ABSA small business team for letting us loose on their community. Here’s the presentation:

brilliant.
Dentist buddy of mine mentioned how quiet his practice is. a quick 5 minute chat and we figured.
redo his website
integrate a blog with regular dental tips. Personally written posts which are emailed to his current clients (they capture email, tel, cell, etc)
Obviously alot more to it and more then 5minute telephone call will be needed, but point is – social media makes it easier and quicker to get out there!

Awesome preso, very simplified.
Most small businesses in South Africa are still offline, using traditional media. It’s now a matter of getting them here from where they are.
I agree the term Target Market becomes more obsolete everyday.

there is a BIG digital divide between rural based sme’s and those in the city
rural sme’s still pretty much function with a target audience in mind and that market is
geographically defined so traditional local media works better for them.
SME forms the bulk of the business sector in rural areas. SME owners and customers are older and less tech savvey and to do online marketing you would have to do just as much education.
But I am pleased to report that viral marketing is alive and well in the platteland in a “psst did you hear about so and so…” kind of way.
Though irritating, I guess in essence it is the kind of captive audience and community that a lot of online social marketing efforts spend a lot of energy and time creating.
