The Ozzies have this thing called the ‘Young Australian of the Year’ where they celebrate decades of suppressed guilt and nominate a group of exemplary citizens for an award. Each year, the group is laden with ‘indigenous’ folk, but generally the award is won by the WASP.

So, anyway, this year they nominated some geezer called Sam Cawthorn, who lost an arm in an accident a while back. He now has a prosthetic arm, and decided to play a prank on the Australian Prime Minister, Paul Rudd.

Mr Rudd, congratulating him on his nomination, shook Cawthorn’s hand and came away with his whole arm. Awesome. Rudd was left holding a dangling arm while the audience were lovin’ it. [Read more about it here.]

It’s funny as hell, but at the same time I’m wondering whether our politicians could handle something like that? Consider the dude who fell off his chair on SABC last year - I heard he’s suing them for ‘gross embarrassment’ – or something like that.

Is it me, or is South Africa’s traditional strength of being able to laugh at ourselves taking a little strain?
