My First Phishing Trip

I thought it would never happen, but today I got my first phishing email.

For those who don’t know, ‘phishing’ is what online fraudsters do to get your bank account details in order to transfer your hard earned cash into their dirty hands. See below:

The email says:

Dear FNB Customer,

Our security team has detected a serious security problem in your FNB Account. Please be informed that your account is not correctly protected against Spam and Trojan attacks.

For immediate protection, It is mandatory that you secure your account using the below secured location now.

Thank you,
First National Bank.

I feel honoured. I thought that maybe my meagre savings weren’t enough for these guys to worry about. I’ve often heard about these emails but never received one. Clearly I’ve moved to another bracket.

On a side note, I was disappointed that the link didn’t work. Being in the web industry, I’d have liked to have seen how authentic the fraudulent replica of the FNB site was.

Anyway, you’ve been warned.

Click here for more on Phishing, and remember: your bank will NEVER ask you to reveal your account details.

I have had quite a few phising emails. I can’t specifically remember one for a local bank though. I’ve only had ones for foreign banks.

I have been using the same address for 5-years though so it’s been out there for a while.
