Check this out: Amazon has released a new device called ‘Kindle’. Chris sent the link to me with the title ‘Books go out the window’.
For some reason, this is one piece of technology that doesn’t fill my heart with joy. I don’t know. Maybe I’m getting old or something but the thought of holding this thing in bed reading the latest Malcolm Gladwell – or the Cape Times – just somehow doesn’t sit well with me. Being an avid reader, I’ve always digged the smell of a fresh new paperback and the Kindle, although eco-friendly as hell, rains all over that parade!
Oh well, bring on the Kindle Clubs.

And what happens when one spills coffee or wine on it? It’ll be very risky reading it in the bath (not that I read in a bath, I don’t have one).

Ha! Has Amazon stopped selling books? Of course not, they know that books could never and will never go out the window!

Fred, whilst i agree with you on some level, it will take a bit of getting used to. But you can’t deny the appeal of being able to travel with kilograms of reading material on one tiny device?? and how bout when you wanting to refer a quote from a book u just can’t remember? is there no appeal in having your collection of books always backed up and only a click away?
In this day and age I think we are constantly looking for ways that technology can improve our lives and remove clutter?
Amazon isn’t the first, Sony has already had a bash, but i think Amazon’s solution is far superior, tho it doesn’t look nearly as cool: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=16184
And who would want to use something like this? http://www.pagesuite.co.uk/
Tho they seem to be doing really well?

Looks like a great idea for the odd traveller who wants to load it with books etc. But what about the battery life? Bit tough taking this gadget into the sticks without a power supply nearby to charge the batteries. I doubt you can read a whole book without charging the batteries.
