It’s tax return time, and like school kids before a big project is due, South Africans around the country are scrambling to get their returns in on time. There are apparently no grounds for extensions this year, so the rush is on!
I can suggest trying E-filing, at www.sarsefiling.co.za, which allows you to fill in and submit your tax return online. Doing it this way gives you until January before you will be liable for any penalties. It’s a fairly impressive system, although it’s not any easier than filling out the form by hand. SARS has done some great work over the years, but as much as they try and “simplify” the process, it still seems that the Average Joe is not going to be able to complete a tax return without some sort of professional help.
While I was wrestling with my own return I wondered what would happen if SARS introduced some Apple simplicity to the whole thing:

I wonder if you would be able to claim back tax on MacBook Pro purchases?!

…and every year just as you got used to the old system he’d launch a new one that makes the old one you have already mastered look like crap.
Everyone would blog about it and wouldn’t be able to wait to get their hands onto the new form.

I am a pensioner with a private(small) pension and a even smaller retirement annuity. I have just recently got email and am quite “ignorant” when it comes to computors, therefore could please assist me in trying to get into “efiling” and do all the necessary requirements. I have had someone do my tax in the past but would like to do it myself in future. Thanking you, Winston.
