New Zealand have already won the 2007 Rugby World Cup. In the advertising category, that is. Check out the ad below from Advertising / Design Goodness, and then compare it to the campaign that our team sponsors, Sasol, came up with (bottom video). Ours has the same sort of theme, sort of a ‘300′ Gladiator-type of thing. The Sasol one is a noble attempt, but somehow cringe-inducingly embarrassing. You know there’s something wrong with our ad when halfway through people burst out into disbelieving laughter. If you’re yet to see it, click on the video and watch for when Schalk and co. turn into orc-jackals (or lemming-dogs, or whatever they’re supposed to be) and start bounding about the place.
In contrast, I reckon Adidas have done a pretty cool job here.

The print ad is beautiful but yes, the video is, well, cheesy and embarrassing and yes, I did find myself laughing halfway through it. I certainly hope the All Blacks take the Cup as there is an American who posted a multi-million dollar bet on them yesterday. Perhaps this kind of financial gain will finally get Americans to notice this awesome sport.
