Hout Bay is a like a hidden gem. Nestled away between mountains and sea, this little haven stores many secrets. I say secrets, because it seems that Hout Bay would like to keep it this way, but every time I come here, I find something else to marvel at.
Sure, it has its problems (3 actually; a housing crisis for the burgeoning township in the centre; wind; and the frustrating traffic entering and leaving through its narrow causeways) but I love it. This morning I love it even more after uncovering another gem – the coffee at Casareccio Cucina Italia. The Casareccio is a small little coffee shop / pizza joint on the main drag near the beach. I popped in while waiting for a meeting, and was promptly served with a gleaming, low foamed, roughly hewn cappuccino. No elegant swirls, no delicate posturing – this coffee comes flat and strong. Upon tasting it, I savoured the well formed white top and the formidable strength of the flavour. The only downside was the (ever so) slight bitter aftertaste, but then that’s a personal thing.
The place itself is something special too. Loads of character, cocky waitresses, and a great vibe amongst the patrons (who all seemed to know each other). In terms of deal-clinching potential, I can only note that there seemed to be quite a lot of business flying around between the tables, so it can’t be too bad! Casareccio definitely a must when you swing by this neck of the woods.

Hola Fred. The one to look out for in Hout Bay is La Cucina, it’s just before (or after) Valley Road.
Also, Max and I opened a coffee shop in the Mainstream shopping centre called “Redemption Cafe”. We sold it in 2004, but I trained the current barista – Princess, and she makes a dam fine cuppa still.
