How to get on TV

Thinking of advertising on TV as a small business?

We all know that advertising in the traditional sense costs a load of cash and anyone in small business thinking of going down the traditional route is about to make a fatal error. Advertising on the telly works for the big guys, because they need something to spend their overweight budget on…and lately the number of boring and non-creative ads on air indicate that for most it’s simply a grudge purchase.

So, what about the small guys? Is there an opportunity to get exposure without shelling out?

Tim Ferris of “The 4-Hour Work Week” writes about how to get TV exposure. He says,

There are three main paths to getting on TV:

1. Make so much noise elsewhere that TV has to pay attention (online is the best place to kick up a firestorm, IMHO)

2. Be a billionaire heiress or pop singer, then either shave your head or go to jail

3. Create and pitch a trend + segment instead of you and your product

Number three is the most neglected.

I once thought that pitching the person and story were the keys to the TV kingdom, but I’ve since learned that’s Minor League. Why? A single person, unless already a celebrity, doesn’t fill 30 minutes on the most popular shows.

The solution is to develop an entire segment based on a new trend or phenomenon.

A great example of this type of thing is Mike Stopforth’s latest stint on the telly. Check it out here. Didn’t cost him a cent! Note how he punted his very own Afrigator. Mike, most of the stuff you said went over my head – but love your work dude.
