watch this spaceOur second interview with a Small Business Superhero is Rene Munro from Co-ordination Crew, an Events & Destination Management Company based in Cape Town, South Africa.

How did you get into this industry?
Once upon a time… in 1989… experience in the corporate world…financial services sectors… marketing departments … organising company incentives and events  … promotions… and then hop, skip and jump out of corporate and onto the other side of the desk, organising events on behalf of clients!

What about your job makes you lie awake at night?
The weather!

What education do you have?
Qualified as a Dancing Teacher and then a certificate in Public Relations – go figure.

What is the best business / industry lesson you’ve learned so far?
You win some, you lose some and then you LEARN some.  Those losses are never wasted, as there is always something more worthwhile round the next corner.

ReneDescribe your average day…
At my desk by 07h00 on most days… will spend a day or 2 in office quoting like mad and typing really fast and then the other few days driving too fast to get to the next appointment or on site running around and making things happen – getting to bed REALLY late – sore feet – sore back – just general madness and action really – nothing out of the ordinary. Sometimes, when I get the opportunity, I bunk and go to a movie at 10h00 in the morning, along with the other ‘bunkers’.  THAT is great fun.  I sit back with my popcorn and smarties and say – ‘jusleik, it’s lekker to have your own business’.

How many people do you have in your team / organisation?
Me, myself, and I … then a book keeper and an accountant and between 5 – 10 lovely gals who freelance for me and assist on a project basis or on the day of the event.  They are all of the dynamic kind and very very organised … not so bad looking either.

What is your BHAG?
My Big Hairy Audacious Goal… is to have a very successful business, without having to employ full time staff – maybe 1.  Is that possible?  Yes, I think so.  I surround myself with very professional suppliers and of course, the freelance crew.

And, finally, a word of advice to Ideate readers – is there a lot of money to be made in the Events industry?
I would say so yes – IF that it is the way that you want to go.  Personally, by opening my own business, I ‘got a life’ – I want to create a great ‘lifestyle’, without having to lose myself in the process.  There are other more important things in life.
