Hiking prices & psychology

Over the long weekend in Montagu we came across this complicated rate board at the start of our big hike. You can just imagine the guys at the “hike office” saying…”Ok, who’s turn is it to go and get the change today?!”.

KISS!

Tip to small business: Make sure you price things right to make it easier for you and your clients.

Pricing is more than just about numbers; it is a play on perception. In many cases, the psychology of pricing is more important than the actual price itself. And small businesses that understand how psychology plays with their pricing strategies can come out the winners.

I found this to be quite true. I recently put a quote together for a client, and they were hassling over the bottom line. After a bit of a discussion we decided to break the bottom line down into three seperate stages, and hey-presto we had a deal! The actual price did not change, only the way that the deal was structured.

That sign has been there as long as we live in nearby Klaas Voogds West (since April 2000).
And about pricing: A game drive with imported and tamed big 5 on display cost over R 700.00 and a game drive with real indigenous game in the ‘veld’ just R 150.00 and where most game reserves with big 5 make big money with is ‘canned hunting’ (20.000 English Pound to shoot a rhino = a bargain!!).
Anyway: that hiking trail in Montagu (worthwhile doing it in Winter) does not have to cost anything. You start at the gate with that sign and just before you have to pay you turn around (we’re Dutch – capice?)
Oh …. uh; until so far there was never somebody in the office ….
