After Fred's review, the waitron sneakily sprinkled soil on Fred's coffee

I went to Caveau in town for a meeting the other day and was surprised.

Now, this column is intended to be an ‘objective coffee review’. I don’t pretend to be a barista or a bean expert, or some kind of seasoned post-Starbucks university graduate know-it-all. I know what I like, and I like to share what I like with you, our humble readers.

Some of our Ideate veterans will remember that I popped into Josephine Mill Caveau in Newlands a while back and gave it one of my best ratings so far. They have twice served me a superlative cuppa. Not without gratitude, I have given the Mill some glowing references since.

CozySo, it was with pleasant anticipation that I strolled into the CBD version of Caveau. Situated in the city centre next to Heritage Square, with beautifully appointed interiors and the perfect ambience for a proactive business meeting.

I won’t make this long, since it hurts me to say this. Maybe it was an off day, or maybe the machine was on the blink…but the coffee was terrible. Unlike the Newlands version, this cappuccino stung the palette like a HB pencil. Once past the creamy foam, the brew was watery and sharp, and nowhere near the thick caramelly smoothness of their sister franchise.

Anyway, I’ll be back. A place this cozy deserves another chance – especially with its reputation. I’ve been accused of being too ‘nice’ in my reviews, but I reckon Caveau is still worth a visit so I’d appreciate your feedback to prove me wrong.

Location: Heritage Square, 92 Bree Street, Cape Town
Phone: 021 422 1367
Internet: 100% on all networks
Plugpoints: Yes, but awkward. My waiter tripped over my laptop cord.
Cappuccino price: R10.00

Meeting potential out of ten: 8 (this place is stunning – cozy, comfortable and relaxed)
Coffee rating out of ten: 3 – did not compare to the Newlands one.
