It was my wife’s birthday the other day so I surprised her with an impromptu trip to visit her best mate in Pringle Bay on the South Coast of Africa. Pringle is a rugged and beautiful part of the world – the last place you’d expect to find great coffee.
It was fine weather, so a good time was had by all. We spent the time walking on the beach and catching up over a few beers. The highlight for me, though, was a trip to the local coffee shop, called ‘Simply Coffee’, the next morning.
I was warned that the place had some fine joe, but I was a little sceptical. After all, what do these hicks know about good coffee? We ordered a few capppas. The coffee was delivered in a fairly inauspicious cup, no frills or accessories. Upon taking a slug, the flavour took me by surprise.
Full bodied, rich and aromatic, this was no ordinary brew.
I finished in a few lively gulps and then sought out the owner. She greeted my query with a knowing grin. The beans, she explained, came from a specialist in Kuils River. The coffee was so popular that she had a sideline business now selling the roast.
Lovely stuff – coffee and a small business story all rolled into one.

I love Pringle Bay. Went there over December (stayed at Villa Marine) it’s such a friendly little ‘dorp’. Hermanus – totally over rated.
When you’re up in JHB again – there’s a coffee shop in Eastgate mall which i believe serves the BEST COFFEE.

The greatest South African cup of coffee can be found at Origin Roasting 28 Hudson Street, De Waterkant in Cape Town owned by David Donde and Joel Singer. I don’t think there are many people in SA who know more about coffee than these two…give them a bash.

I will definitely enquire further about the Kuils River connection the next time I go. It;s certainly worth another visit.

I hated the Pringle Mingle simply because there is a shop next to it in the little courtyard and I was shouted at by the owner for getting out my camera. Apparently there was a small sign that read “no photos please” and I didn’t see it. He asked me “Are you stupid or just illiterate”…
