The circus

World Wide Creative and Live Alchemy (the 2 main protagonists of the award-winning, world-beating, Cherryflava-chasing business blog that is Ideate) are both fans of the idea of the ‘Home-Office’. My company, World Wide Creative, has now moved into really cool new studio, complete with swimming pool balcony, so coming to work everyday is no sweat at all. However, most days, I am on the road, visiting clients, running errands and meeting suppliers. In light of this, I have converted my garage into an office so that I can leave straight from work or come home after a meeting without schlepping through traffic to the studio. I have since discovered there are many benefits to working from home – not least of which being able to creep up to my room and work in close proximity to my little family.

Good to see you’ve got some padding between that blisteringly hot laptop and your… lap. Wouldn’t want to ruin your chances of a bigger family!

Haha @ Andrew. That was the first thing i picked up on too. I usually use a pillow under my laptop. It’s like a hot water bottle in the UK winter months.

I work from home. In fact, my business is in my home. A full video editing suite, admin office, and small shooting studio.

The one thing I find hard to deal with is prospective clients viewing me as “small time” because I have a “home based business.”

All my videotaping usaly happens outside of the home at the clients office or on location. But my office, meeting area, and post production studio is at home.

Any ideas on how to overcome this stigma of running a business out of your home?

    Thanks

If your home is your office, then present yourself as such to your clients. You can turn this into an advantage and get your clients to envy your choice of location. It does need to be a bit tidy with no nappies and screaming kids around. We run our business from home and now have a 25 seater training room opening onto our pool and braai area. People love coming to our home for workshops and meetings. We even dress down and chat around a table in shorts and slops. A good way to do business. all about attitude and being proud to be a home based business.

I would like to work from home but i have googled about this. There are so many people/companies who offer Data Capturing, Typist, Clerk etc and you have to pay a certain fee for a training manual and they gaurantee that if you work hard you could make R4000-R7000 a week. I was so interested as im at home at the moment, and paid the fee. The guy vanished into thin air and i have not heard from him since my payment.

Could you please assist me as i would like to do this “work from home” thing…but i dont know how legitimate these people/companies are…

Or if you know of someone who is actually working for one of them and is happy about it and does get paid at the end of the day…

I would love to have referals & to know which companies are geniune.

    Thanks
