South Africa’s gross domestic product increased by a higher than expected 5.6% in the fourth quarter of 2006 as the economy notched up its 33rd consecutive quarter of growth since 1998 – the longest in the country’s history.
More than six million tourists visited South Africa between January and September 2006, putting the country well on track to break its annual tourist arrivals record yet again.
An expanding tax base, a growing economy and a decade of sound fiscal policies have given the South African government the “fiscal space” to massively increase spending on services and infrastructure.
On the small business front:
South Africa has invested R170-million in a programme aimed at assisting small, medium and micro enterprises in the tourism sector ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
On the budget front:
Education received the greatest share – R105.5-billion – of Finance Minister Trevor Manuel’s Budget for 2007/08, with R8.1-billion going towards better teacher salaries, teaching assistants and support staff in schools across the country.
The government is to increase its safety and security budget by 34% to R44-billion over the next three years as South Africa moves to increase its police force to 190 000 by 2010.
