Search for the Great South African Cup of Coffee: Bravo

The chocolate sprinkles climbed mount bravo

Bravo, an Italian bistro / coffee shop / restaurant in Mouille Point (Cape Town) was the venue for a get together with a new client. Upon arrival, I jumped straight to the most important item on the agenda, the cappuccino.

It arrived with a fanfare of beautiful presentation, ostentatious foam spiral towering up from the cup, chocolate sprinkles scattered with gay abandon across the top.

Nothing like a good looking cup of coffee to lift the tone of a meeting!

All was splendid until I swirled it over my sensitive palate. All of a sudden my mood soured. The flavour was a big disappointment, bland and meaningless. The texture was bubbly, which is a barista no-no, and it tasted like the milk was Everfresh – which is what a fellow-coffee lover dubbed ‘devil’s sperm’.

The venue is in a great location, and it has a nice italian feel. Bravo overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, and on a cold winter’s day, it has good potential for a Friday soirée over pizza and beer. If you’re looking for outstanding coffee, however, rather take a stroll across the parking lot to CaffeNeo.

Location: Beach Rd, Mouille Point, Cape Town
Internet: 100% iBurst was all I could ascertain.
Plugpoints: Yes – they were very accommodating.
Cappuccino price:
R12

Meeting potential out of ten: 7
Coffee rating out of ten: 5 (I gave it an extra point for presentation)

The Bluebox idea of having good ‘inhouse’ coffee is quite a good one. The best coffee on the go 8 hours a day, your cup is always ‘half full’!!! ;)

I think the froth is a bit over the top, probably to disguise the taste of the actual coffee. Although I have to say the coffee at Cafe Neo is one of the worst coffees I have had taste wise (apart from SA instant coffee – which is another thing that needs its own blog). I obviously have very English tastes.
But I am very willing to try these places, to give a second opinion.

Nic – this has always been a subjective column and slightly self-defeating to my well-versed argument about single person ratings (movie, wine, restaurant reviews) as being skewed and unrealistic.

The coffee thing is very much a tongue in cheek affair, and so, in the spirit of keeping things honest, your second opinions are much welcome!
