In the Ideate spirit of starting small businesses in South Africa (see Bug Zapper et al), this week we launched our latest project called Art Revision.com. This new online venture is the result of my wife’s desire to be creative and make cash, while remaining at home with our growing brood of kids (Yes, folks, you heard it here first. No. 3 is on the way!)
It is a small experiment. It’s based on Mrs Roed’s prodigious talent at reproducing old, famous artworks, and one which we aim to grow via a twin strategy of introducing family and friends to the website, and a small Google AdWords budget. The site was designed and put together by my fellow Ideators, and was built using the World Wide Creative Webcan platform. Some points to consider doing this project:
- Will it be ‘niche’ enough for it to work on Google AdWords?
- Will it require other forms of marketing?
- Will it provide an example for other stay-at-home moms to build a small, sustainable ‘second income’ business in South Africa?
Check it out, and please give feedback and suggestions. Watch this space…!

Hi Fred, Just saw the article on art and was impressed. I somehow wonder how something so tangible can be sold on the net? People buy differently these days i guess.
I have a product (and a story) that needs telling. Ironically also in the art world, but using a woven fibre as the medium. Check out our site attached, and let me know if you have any ideas.
The site is slightly outdated, but if you mail me, i will send more updated pictures.
Thanks
Alex
