I’ve long been interested in viral marketing*. In 2004, I consulted with a company on how to kickstart a viral campaign for a new company. The CEO asked me: ‘What is the formula?’ Ish, what a question. Two years down the line I still don’t know, but what I can say for sure is that, if it’s funny, it helps. Widespread broadband has helped too. It allows small businesses to create their own videos using iMovie or Windows Movie Maker and post it on YouTube. Check this out, a viral YouTube spot for BlendTech demonstrating how to make a delicious coke / roast chicken drink. It’s one of a series of ‘Will it Blend?’ ads posted on the net…

    ??
Because it can be done, should it be done? is my first reaction.

Besides being sure that viral marketing (where an idea, concept, company or trend spreads like wildfire, mainly through the net) has value and its own place among all other, well most, marketing trends/ideas, but does it suit the product, service you want to wildfire? Or is it just one of those trendy trends: this is new, it’s on the net, so lets do it.

Seth has got one it seems. Someone must be very active at the moment turning it into a wildfire ;-)
