Hey Stupid, Keep it Simple

I loved reading this post from Innocent Drinks Blog. It’s a great example of keeping the main thing the main thing and a tribute to the fact that having a simple business idea and sticking to it is something to be celebrated. Ok, we’ve played our hand at starting some businesses, but I really want to try my hand at doing something that has ALREADY been done before, an existing product or service and simply do a great job providing it.
Doing something that has already been done before doesn’t necessarily equal boredom – it’s all about how you approach it. It means that you WILL have immediate competition, you WILL have something to measure yourself by and you WILL almost certainly have a whole bunch of people (including your mom), wondering why you started something that already exists.

I think the whole idea of simplicity is something we forget far to often. Not just in our business idea, but in everything we do in running and marketing that business. I think its all the cr@p around us; gurus, complex software and therorytical books about applying human behaviour to selling, etc, etc. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying they are bad, just that it causes us to loose focus on what we are actually doing.
I know one of your regular blog readers; Karin (from Wood-You-Like) has just written a great book about keeping business simple. Check out her website at: http://www.thekissbusiness.co.uk

I reckon one of the best pieces of advice was given to Mike and I when we went to a framing shop. The guy said business is all about:
1. Have a good product
2. Keep your promises
He was a pretty happy looking guy
