Goens

I saw a friend of mine whilst in the city of Gold (Jhb). A guy my age (24), also involved in small business, yet with about five years of experience more than me. Instead of going to varsity like us good boys did, he decided to start a business. He went into an IT support business, which we all know are famous for going bust. So his went bust a few years ago already, we were chatting about what that experience taught him. He said that when his business went under he lost everything. It was a terrible experience, but his current business success is very largely attributed to that failure. He said that losing everything gave him the opportunity to realize that having nothing is not that scary. It put him in the position of having nothing to lose, which in actual fact made him a very powerful man. Something that a degree could never give! His current business is doing well, far better than his previous business ever did. He says that now he’s got really big, solid ‘goens’. The type of goens that come from having nothing to lose and everything to gain. His failure has given him the confidence to now succeed. He may still fail, however he’s not afraid of failing, which makes me envious of him. Having nothing to lose is a pretty fantastically dangerous place to be in. However, I think the true test is when we do have something to lose, wife, and kids, business what ever it may be, and still have the goens to keep them
